Five truths to hold close to your heart

Apr 14, 2025

Assalaamu'alaykum,

Experiencing pressures in life is something every one of us can relate to at some point or another - whether it's managing our job, facing conflicts, taking care of our family or dealing with extreme personal challenges.

The constant push and pull of responsibilities, the weight of our goals, the unexpected hurdles that arise and the internal pressure we often amplify are increasingly becoming part of our everyday lives in an ever-growing chaotic world.

And there are also those times when multiple tensions in life collide at once, creating an intense sense of overwhelm and stress, making it even harder to see clearly and move forward.

Sometimes, (and I believe this to be a very normal human emotion) it can feel like we've been stuck inside of a difficult situation for so long that we start to wonder if there's any way out.

Or we find ourselves standing at a crossroad, uncertain of what's around the corner and unable to see clearly into the distance.

These moments can feel intensely uncomfortable and it’s during these testing times that I find myself retreating inwardly, seeking guidance from Allah and searching for answers deep within my soul.

Each time, I find my way back to the conclusion that Allah SWT has given us immense hope and made inner calm within our grasp…

Even when there are whirlwinds on the outside turning life as you know it upside down.

Even when the pace of life leaves you breathless and struggling to keep up.

Even when you're striving towards goals but not seeing the outcomes your heart desires.

No matter what’s happening, there is always a way to rise above both inner and outer tensions and embrace a more serene perspective.

Our faith continually reminds us that it's not the burdens we carry that define us, but how we choose to bear them.

Life's inevitable tests are often blessings in disguise, strategically placed in our lives as opportunities for growth, cleansing and deeper connection with our Rabb.

During times of hardship, holding tightly to this rope of hope and focusing on our response rather than the specifics of the problems is the way to transcend and calm the inner storms that might otherwise brew within.

When life becomes overwhelming, I take a few deep, calming breaths and remind myself of these truths:

  1. There is khayr (good) in every situation; embracing this reality helps me seek the ease placed by Allah SWT and keep it in my line of vision, with a grateful heart.
  2. Allah is Al-Alim (The All-Knowing) and Al- Hayy (The Ever-Living). He is aware of every whisper in my heart and is present in every single minute detail of my existence. He will arrange everything in the most meaningful way.
  3. Through patience and prayer, Allah’s help will come. “O believers! Seek comfort in patience and prayer. Allah is truly with those who are patient.” [2:153]
  4. Nothing in this world lasts forever except for my deeds, so I must choose each response wisely.
  5. Today could be my last day on earth; I need to focus on what truly matters.

By etching these truths into the core of my being, I remain hopeful that every tension we endure and every challenge we face in this life serves a meaningful purpose in our spiritual journey towards our true home, the akhirah (hereafter).
