When Urgency Becomes a Gift
Apr 17, 2025
Assalaamu'alaykum,
“Speed is a force.”
“Slow down to speed up.”
“Stillness is the key.”
“Be people of action.”
And so on…
Every day, there’s a new theory, a fresh philosophy to jump on board with. And while many carry truth and relevance, I’ve found that your pace, how fast or slow you move, often depends on the season you’re in.
It’s not just about mindset. It’s about your environment, your company, your family’s needs, your emotional calibration, your work/life balance and most importantly, your health and spiritual state.
But this isn’t what I wanted to talk to you about today.
Today, I wanted to talk about urgency.
The Prophet ๏ทบ taught us: “Live in the morning not expecting to live until evening, and in the evening not expecting to live until morning.”
While we may absorb this on a cognitive level and think, “That’s a nice idea,” it’s only when we truly internalise what this is calling us to that our response begins to shift.
When held in the right way, this notion doesn’t create panic or pressure. It stirs something far deeper…
A sense of urgency that’s grounded in purpose.
A presence that’s alive with meaning.
An elevated approach to life, guided by faith.
Our focus shifts to seizing the opportunities Allah places on our path back to Him.
To pleasing Him.
To elevating in rank, washing ourselves clean of sin and securing our provisions in both this life and the next.
Our sight begins to seek the places and spaces that serve the greater journey.
And our limbs?
They race, not in stress, but in surrender.
Towards every opportunity to fulfil our purpose and be in service of our Lord.
With this beautiful, faith-aligned sense of urgency, we wouldn’t be so consumed by the petty things in life.
We’d feel inspired, compelled by a mission and vision so meaningful, so exciting, that problems and conflict don’t sit as heavily on our chest and occupy far less space in our minds.
This kind of urgency isn’t a call to abandon life or rush through it.
It’s a call to live…
To honour the life Allah has placed in front of me.
To move or be still with purpose.
Because whether I’m in motion or in stillness, there is something quietly powerful beneath it all...
A focus.
An intention.
A spiritual current that fuels my thoughts and aligns my actions with something far, far greater.
Here are four ways that cultivating a healthy, faith-rooted sense of urgency can benefit you:
- It sets a clear priority:
You begin to move with purpose, not pressure. You’re clearer on what truly matters and what doesn’t.
- It gives you the ability to let go:
When your eyes are fixed on Allah ‘azza wajal and the Akhirah, you’re less likely to get caught up in the noise. Petty grievances, people-pleasing and perfectionism begin to fall away.
- It creates a higher standard for your life:
You become more intentional with your time, choices, and company. You start living for something, not just going through the motions.
- It helps you avoid wasting time:
You learn to say no with grace and yes with conviction. Your time becomes sacred and so do the actions you strive to fill it with.
How will you create a sense of healthy urgency in your own life?
