Assalaamu'alaykum,
Although each of our paths are uniquely our own, Allah created us to journey together, like a caravan convoy crossing the desert.
Some ride camels, carrying what seems like the weight of the world. Others travel light, moving slowly on foot. Some race head, others pause to catch their breath. But we’re all moving, side by side, across the same terrain, a convoy of hearts journeying through the same desert path towards the same destination.
This, in itself, is a mercy from Allah.
There’s a special kind of strength that comes from travelling together with the right companions. Some are there to hold you up when you grow tired. Some remind you of where you’re going when the path gets confusing. Some are placed there to test you, and in doing so, help refine you.
But every traveller has something to offer another.
When I lived abroad in the Far East for a few years, the early days felt quite daunting as I didn’t know anyone. But I made duaa that Allah would surround me with good, sincere people. And He did, Alhamdulilah. To this day, those same people I call my family.
And the same thing happened when I returned to the UK with my (then) young children. Again, I made duaa that Allah would place musk sellers in my life, just as the Prophet ﷺ described the best of companions to be. And once again, He did, Alhamdulilah.
Not a day goes by where I take those sweet, fragrant souls for granted. Truly, they are a gift.
But it’s not just close friends who make the journey meaningful.
I see every person I meet as a potential teacher. Everyone carries something valuable within them, an experience, a perspective, a reminder.
Some of the most powerful moments in my work happen when sincere hearts come together from all over the world. Even in a virtual space, there’s so much barakah when people come with a willingness to grow, share and support one another. And that’s something I treasure deeply.
I know we’re all different in how we connect. Some are shy. Some guard their space. Some prefer solitude, while others wear their hearts on their sleeves. But wherever you fall on that spectrum, here are three reasons I believe it’s worth being open to the power of the collective:
- The Prophet ﷺ reminded us that we are like one body.
When one part hurts, the rest feels it. This interconnectedness isn’t just emotional, it’s spiritual. We’re meant to uplift each other, pray for one another and serve one another on the path to Allah.
- The believer is a mirror to their brother or sister.
Being in the company of others, especially those striving for goodness, allows us to see ourselves more clearly. It’s in the honest reflections, the gentle nudges and shared wisdom that we find opportunities to grow.
- There is strength in Suhbah.
The companions of the Prophet ﷺ weren’t just individuals, they were a collective. A united group walking the path of truth together. We weren’t meant to journey alone. Even a single shared reminder can shift the state of a person’s heart.
Wherever you are on your journey, your attitude and approach to those around you can make all the difference. Sometimes, your presence, your kindness or your willingness to share even a small part of yourself can shift something in someone else’s life for the better, while transforming your own in the process.
